DANIEL L. BAGENSTOS, ... BADGENSTOS in military records . .He enlisted 9-13-1862,mustered in as Pvt. 151st Inf. Regt.,Co. H 11-1-1862,andmustered out with company 7-27-1863About the 151st RegimentThe march to Gettysburg commenced the 6-12-1863. As the enemy pushed on intoPA,Gen. Reynolds followed,and on 7-1-1863 his cavalry immediately commenced thebattle,the brigades of Cutler and Meredith coming up soon after,and continuing the fight.The First Brigade arrived 12:30 AM and took position on the extreme left flank of thecorps.,the 151st holding the left of the brigade line.The enemy was driven back,firing ceased for nearly an hour after Gen. Archer andsome 800 of his men were captured. About noon the enemy opened fire,the battle continuedfor 2-1/2 hours. At 2:30 PM the 151st was detached to be held in reserve. Shortly thereafterthe enemy concentrated in large force and began closing in. A gap,occasioned by severelosses,was threatening to prove fatal to the entire left wing. The 151st was ordered to fillthis gap.The Union Army had to retreat. On 7-3-1863,the enemy made its grand charge. Theenemy was finally driven at all points,many throwing down their arms and surrendering,andthe dear-bought victory was won.The heroism of the 151st in this battle was unsurpassed. It went into the fight with 21officers & 466 men. Of these,2 officers and 66 men were killed, 12 officers and 167 menwere wounded,and 100 missing,upwards of 75%.Ot 6:00 AM on 7-6-1863 the regiment moved with the army in pursuit of Lee,comingup with his rear guard at Funktown on the 12th,and his main body near Williamsport on the14th. That night the enemy escaped. Its term of service had now nearly expired. It wasaccordingly relieved from duty on the 19th,and returned to Harrisburg,where on the 27th,itwas mustered out.- page 41 -A2 B4 C5 D5 |
