residence | Shillington,PARay recalled that his grandparents(D5.,p. Ill) lived in the old family homestead (see alsoChapter 3, p.330-6). The homestead was a two-story log house. The structure was laterreplaced by a Sears & Roebuck house. The new house was shipped to Mohrsville by train andthen taken by horse and wagon to the farm. It had all modern conveniences, including gaslights, which made the residents deathly afraid of fire. The water was piped quite a distance, from the Skull hill. Apparently, the "Bagenstose Road" was not there at that time because thehouse was on the other side of the family-named road. There was an apple orchard across from the house and above that was grandmaswatermelon patch. Ray and his cousin Irene Schrack(E4 FI., p. 112) spent many a summer onthe farm. They tended the cows and brought them home to be milked. Ray remembered goingto the street market in Reading,PA by horse and wagon with his grandparents; they left at3:30 AM.Irene Schrack has their grandparents beautiful marriage certificate. It contains individualportraits of them as well as the minister, who is at the bottom center of the certificate. Peopsaid this marriage would not last because she was nearly 9 years younger than he; it did andthey had seven children each of the first five were followed by the next less than two yearslater.Rays mother died 12-6-1918 and his grandfather shortly thereafter, on 1-19-1919. Hisgrandmother liked things done right. Next, their son Harvey farmed the land, but that didntlast very long, for he lacked experience. Charles Zimmerman now owns the farm(in 2000).Its beautiful. There is white siding on the house and they added two large barns. They nowhave 350 cows and are planning to increase the herd to 450 | Adde2002 | |||
