Unmarried., lived with sister Bertha- Page 386 -Backenstoss in GermanyADOLF HERBERT GUSTAV BACKENSTOS (dF3 dGl dH2,page 388), who provided much of theoriginal research in this section, has traced his line in Germany back to 1579 where a MICHAELBACKENSTOSS(1553-1626) was located in the Langensteinbach Chronik(1579) as immigrated fromRafz,Kanton Zurich,SW; implying relationship to the Swiss Baggenstoss of 1400-1500.(Unfortunately,the Staatsarchiv in Zurich report no Kirchenbucher,or church records, from beforare still in existence there or in Rafz.) This MICHAEL was in Langensteinbach where he paid atax/rent 1583-1586 (Abgebenbuch), a farmer who was still alive in 1620 (Archiv in Karlsruhe, GL66/10243 & 4). This same MICHAEL is mentioned in 1614 for receiving contributions due (Gefalle)from St. Barbara; this could be money or payment in kind or ground to work on. St. Barbara wasprobably formerly the land of a church, or more likely a cloister; today it would be an estateFurthermore, in the "Heiligenrechnung", or financial records, of the parish church St.Nikolaus of Langensteinbach for 1660-1661, there appears another MICHAELBACKENSTOSS (1612-1668). These two MICHAELS must be related, perhaps grandfatherand grandson. The records in the Town Hall at Durlach start in 1677 and list a BALTHASER (BALTHES)BACKENSTOSS and a LUDWIG BACKENSTOSS (1647-1698).One of these is probably the father of JOHANN ADAM BACKENSTOSS (1688- 1737) listed asdAl. below.ADOLF(page 388) believes that JOHANN ADAM BACKENSTOSS(dAl, page 386) is descendedfrom the two MICHAELS listed above because he named a son MICHAEL( probably for hisgrandfather or family name). ADOLF also feels the records show that sons MICHAEL(dB5,page389) and ANDREAS ADAM (dB6,page 390) left for America but never arrived. ADOLF alsomentioned that his father and uncle wrote their name with the "SS"-ending prior to 1925 |
