BACKENSTOE,the town of Norborne was incorporated 4-20-1874 with stated boundaries and 5 men wereappointed trustees. In May 1878, the town was reorganized under the state law and becamea city of fourth class with a mayor, marshall, treasurer, clerk, and 4 aldermen.Included was a biographical sketch of RODOLPH(sic) W. BACKENSTOE: His father LEVIwas a tinner by trade and a dealer in stoves and hardware, as soon as Rodolph was oldenough his father took him into the shop and taught him the business. In 1869, R. W. came toMO and settled in Cameron, where he worked his trade for about 3 months, then came toCarroll Co. and settled at Norborne, working as a tinner. In 1873 he opened his own store forone year. He sold it and went to AR for a few months. On his return he bought his formerstore and again entered the merchandishing business at that place. He built a large new storeand enlarged his business. A Mason and member & officer of Norborne Lodge No.16 ,x. O.U.W.From Norborne Centennial 1868 -1968. R. W. BACKENSTOE, believedwholeheartedly in advertising, but when he built his new brick building for his tinnery,hardware, and implements, he was hard pressed for immediate cash, so he trained his wifesparrot to scream at everyone who came in the store, "McCormick Machines are Best".Note: - R. W. must have moved to Kansas City,MO by 1909 because he appears in city directoryas having a hardware store on E. 12th St. Listed same way through 1924; must have retired forthe city directory lists him only at his residence. He is not listed in 1926, only his wifes nappears. Neither listed in 1927 directory or thereafter. Their names not found in JacksonCounty master cemetery index "
