Dr. JOHN PERRIE BACKESTO ...An article in the San Jose Mercury News, dateline 8-10-1994,contains additional information about this relative, entitled: Backesto Parks historic neighborhood role to be celebrated.In part:A celebration this weekend recognizing Backestos historic role in its North San Jose,CA neiwill also be a springboard for a revival of the old Italian game, bocce, organizers hope. The park takes up four city blocks between East Jackson and Empire streets and between North 15th and 13th streets. It is used by large numbers of Hispanics and Asians, as well as descendants of the Italians and others who once made up the area.The spacious park also has facilities for basketball, tennis, softball and handball. Anna E. C Backesto donated $30,000 to the city of San Jose in 1890 in memory of her husband, Dr. John Perrie Backesto according to city historian Clyde Arbuckles "History of San Jose."The Backesto name was changed from its original Backenstohs when he came west from Pennsylvania Arbuckle says.The city used the money in 1920 to buy the 2-1/2 acres, which it opened as park in 1922 |

He is reported to ha ve resided in San Diego, CA. The 1887-8 San Jose City Directory lists: BACKESTO,JOHN P.,physician,540 North First; his widow ANNE E. BACKESTO resided at same address through 1918; she is not listed in 1919.The San Jose iVfcrcury of March 20,1890gives a detailed account of his funeral: The Patriarch Militant Bear the Body to the Grave Buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Accordance With the Solemn Ritual of the Order of Odd Fellows.The funeral took place from the family residence at 540 North First St. There is no mention family other than Mrs. Backesto |
